Question Debt

Why should I trust DebtBusters?

17 March 2026

Getting out of debt can be stressful, and if your debts and living expenses exceed your income, you may need professional help.

A debt counsellor can help you get back on track – but we understand that trusting someone with your financial future is a big decision.

You’re right to be cautious, because not all debt counsellors are legitimate.

Consumers have been enrolled in debt counselling in South Africa without their consent. In 2025 alone, the National Credit Regulator (NCR) ordered refunds of up to R1.9 million and removed 190 people from unlawful debt counselling arrangements.

Debt counselling – also known as debt review – is safest when handled by a registered, trustworthy, and experienced provider.

DebtBusters has been operating since 2007 and is NCR-registered (NCRDC1801/2374/2499/4172). Our services comply with the National Credit Act, ensuring legal protection and strong consumer safeguards.

We’ve helped over one million South Africans through debt counselling and have been named Top National Debt Counsellor nine times. This industry-wide award is peer-reviewed by thousands of registered debt professionals and credit providers.

Who is DebtBusters?

DebtBusters is South Africa’s largest debt management company and a trusted leader in debt counselling. Part of Confluent (formerly Intelligent Debt Management), the company was built from the ground up by Ian Wason, whose vision was to transform how South Africans manage and overcome debt.

DebtBusters empowers clients to take control of their finances through tailored debt management solutions.

The number of borrowers who completed debt counselling has increased twelvefold since 2016, according to DebtBusters’ Debt Index. Most DebtBusters clients are debt-free within 60 months, but they can make lump-sum payments to complete the process faster.

Key DebtBusters milestones:

  • Close to 20 years in the industry: We’ve been serving clients since 2007.
  • We’ve helped more than one million South Africans to debt freedom.
  • Debt counselling through DebtBusters can reduce unsecured debt interest rates from around 25.3% to roughly 2.5% a year, helping clients repay debt faster.
  • We’ve been named Top National Debt Counsellor nine times at the Debt Review Awards.
  • We’re regularly featured in national publications and on radio and television.
  • We’ve achieved a rating of 4.5/5 on Google Reviews.

How to tell if a debt counselling service is trustworthy

When you’re under financial pressure, it can be difficult to identify a legitimate debt counsellor. Knowing what to look for helps protect your money, credit record, and future.

The debt counsellor can explain the process to you

A trustworthy debt counsellor should be able to walk you through the entire debt counselling process step by step, from application to court order and eventual clearance.

They should use plain language that’s easy to understand. If they use a lot of jargon or rush you through the process, it’s a red flag.

At DebtBusters, our consultants take time to explain the process clearly and transparently, so you can make an informed decision with confidence.

The debt counsellor protects your personal and financial information

Debt counselling requires access to sensitive information, including your income, expenses, and credit accounts. A trustworthy professional takes data protection seriously.

When choosing a debt counsellor, ask what security measures are in place and whether the company complies with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

DebtBusters uses secure systems, applies bank-level data protection, and is POPIA-compliant, ensuring that your information will be handled responsibly and confidentially.

The debt counsellor follows the fee guidelines set out by the NCR

Debt counselling fees are regulated by the National Credit Regulator (NCR). A legitimate debt counsellor will charge fees strictly in line with these guidelines and will disclose all costs upfront.

Be cautious of debt counsellors who:

  • Demand large upfront payments
  • Insist on cash payments
  • Charge fees outside NCR-approved limits

DebtBusters adheres to NCR fee guidelines and provides full fee disclosure before you proceed, with no hidden costs or surprise charges.

The debt counsellor is registered with the NCR

Only debt counsellors registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR) are legally allowed to offer debt counselling services in South Africa.

You can verify any debt counsellor’s registration on the NCR website at www.ncr.org.za.

DebtBusters is a registered debt counsellor, giving you legal protection under the National Credit Act.

The debt counsellor uses a reputable payment distribution agency

In debt counselling, your monthly repayment must be paid to a Payment Distribution Agency (PDA), not directly to the debt counsellor. The PDA ensures your money is correctly allocated to your creditors and that accurate records are kept.

A reputable debt counsellor will clearly disclose which PDA they use.

DebtBusters uses Hyphen, one of South Africa’s most trusted PDAs, giving clients peace of mind that their payments are handled independently and transparently.

The debt counsellor is willing to assist you with queries

Debt counselling is not a once-off transaction – it’s a journey that can last a few years. You should be able to get answers, updates, and support as needed.

A trustworthy debt counsellor provides multiple communication channels, such as phone, email, and online access, and does not disappear once you’ve signed up.

DebtBusters offers ongoing support through a dedicated support team, phone and email assistance, and digital access – so help is always available when you need it.

Red flags – when not to trust a debt counsellor

You should be cautious if a debt counselling service:

  • Asks for large upfront payments
  • Is not registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR)
  • Does not use a mandated Payment Distribution Agency (PDA)
  • Promises to erase or remove your debt
  • Makes payments to an individual person
  • Pressures you to sign immediately
  • Has no physical office address
  • Has consistently poor online reviews or unresolved complaints
  • Refuses to provide written contracts or documentation

If something feels rushed, secretive, or too good to be true, it usually is.

DebtBusters reviews and client testimonials

Choosing a debt counsellor is a big decision, and hearing directly from people who have completed the process can make all the difference.

DebtBusters’ client reviews and case studies introduce you to real South Africans who entered debt counselling and successfully worked their way back to financial stability and peace of mind.

Here are two testimonials from clients who completed the process and received their clearance certificates:

Renecia:

Willem:

Rebuilding finances – and a marriage

In one case study, Chantal and Ashley explain how mounting debt placed severe strain on their finances and their relationship. Through debt counselling with DebtBusters, they were able to restructure their repayments into an affordable plan, reduce financial stress, and regain stability, ultimately helping to protect both their household finances and their marriage.

A young mother overcame a R200,000 debt burden

Another DebtBusters case study follows a young single mother who entered debt counselling with more than R200,000 in unsecured debt. With the help of a structured repayment plan and legal protection under the National Credit Act, she regained control of her finances and worked towards debt freedom without resorting to further credit.

Yando’s car accident plunged him into debt – but he recovered

In a third case study, family breadwinner Yando took out a R120,000 loan to rebuild his mother’s home. Soon after that, he bought a car to drive to work. When his car was written off in an accident, Yando found himself trapped in a cycle of debt just to survive. DebtBusters helped him regain his financial freedom with confidence.

How to get started with DebtBusters

Taking the first step towards debt freedom can feel overwhelming – but getting started with DebtBusters is simple, confidential, and obligation-free.

Here’s what you can expect.

Step 1: Book a free consultation

Your journey starts with a free, no-obligation consultation. We don’t pressure you into debt counselling.

Get in touch in the way that suits you best:

  • Complete the online enquiry form on the DebtBusters website. We will call you back.
  • New clients can call DebtBusters on 0861 365 914.
  • Reach out via customer services for quick assistance on 086 999 0606.

A consultant will contact you to understand your situation and explain how debt counselling works.

Step 2: Complete a debt assessment

To assess whether debt counselling is right for you, DebtBusters will complete a thorough affordability and debt assessment in line with the National Credit Act.

You’ll be asked to provide some basic information, including:

  • Proof of income (for example, payslips or bank statements)
  • Your regular household expenses
  • If you are married, ensure that your spouse’s information is available, too.

Let your debt counsellor know whether all your debts are listed on your credit report, and highlight any that are missing. This helps determine if you are over-indebted and what level of repayment is sustainable.

Step 3: Review your options

Once your assessment is complete, a registered debt counsellor will explain your options clearly and in plain language. This includes:

  • Whether debt counselling is appropriate for your situation
  • How your monthly repayments could be restructured
  • What legal protection debt counselling provides
  • What the expected timeline looks like

You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and fully understand the recommendation before making a decision.

Step 4: Sign up and start the process

If you decide to proceed, you’ll sign the required documentation to formally enter debt counselling. DebtBusters then:

  • Notifies your credit providers
  • Begins negotiating reduced and restructured repayments
  • Submits the required legal applications

From this point, you are protected under the National Credit Act, and credit providers may no longer pursue legal action against you – provided you pay your instalment every month.

Step 5: Receive court protection and begin repayment

Once a court order or consent order is granted, your new repayment plan becomes legally binding. You’ll make a single, affordable monthly payment through a registered Payment Distribution Agency, which distributes the funds to your creditors.

From here, the focus is on consistent repayments, ongoing support, and steady progress towards debt freedom – until you receive your clearance certificate and exit debt counselling.

If your finances improve, debt settlement is also an option. DebtBusters can help negotiate settlement discounts, allowing you to obtain your clearance certificate sooner.

With the right guidance and a structured plan, it’s possible to become debt-free. If you’re looking for a trustworthy, accredited provider for debt counselling in South Africa, you can trust DebtBusters to support you every step of the way. Bust debt for good with DebtBusters!
